Acts 16:25–34
Introduction: In Acts 16, we read about the conversion of the Philippian jailer. Paul and Silas went to prison, but God had a greater purpose than their suffering. Through the events of that night, a jailer would hear the Gospel and come to know the Lord.
The Philippians Jailer had:
I. A Divine Appointment- Acts 16:16–24- Paul and Silas were persecuted, beaten, and thrown into prison for preaching the Gospel. But God was working even in their suffering. What appeared to be a setback, a bad thing was used by God for His purpose. We may not understand why God allows certain circumstances, but He can use even our trials to reach others with the Gospel. Question- Lord what would you have me to do in this situation?
II. A Crisis That Revealed His Need- Acts 16:25–29- At midnight, Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises to God. The jailer faced a crisis he could not control. God used that moment to turn his attention toward the truth. His position, authority, strength, or effort could save this man.
III. A Great Question- Acts 16:30- “And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” If someone asked you that question, can you lead them through the scriptures so they can be saved? He recognized that he needed help. Mark 8:36 “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
IV. Faith in Jesus Christ- Acts 16:31–32 “And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” Paul and Silas gave him a clear Gospel answer. Salvation is through Jesus Christ. He died for our sins and rose again. Titus 3:5 “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”
V. A Household Reached by the Gospel– Acts 16:33 “And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.” The Gospel reached his family. Paul and Silas had spoken the Word of the Lord to everyone in his house.
VI. A Changed Life After Salvation- Acts 16:33–34- The jailer washed their wounds, welcomed them into his house, and rejoiced in God. He showed compassion by caring for Paul and Silas. Got baptized by obeying the command.
Conclusion: What Must You Do to Be Saved? The Philippian jailer’s story shows us how God can use difficult circumstances to bring a person and those around him to hear the Gospel.
