Introduction: This first chapter of Psalms is the gateway to the entire psalms. God begins with a simple question: what kind of man/woman are you going to be? There are two ways presented in chapter 1: the way of the righteous and the way of the ungodly. There are two kind of people, two directions.
I. THE BLESSED MAN IS SEPARATED FROM THE WORLD
He does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly
He does not stand in the way of sinners
He does not sit in the seat of the scornful
II. THE BLESSED MAN IS IN THE WORD
He delights in the Word- to delight is to have or to take great pleasure in, to have joy in.
He meditates upon the Word- to dwell on, consider, really think about it.
III. THE BLESSED MAN IS STABLE IN A CHANGING WORLD
He is planted- You need roots. And roots take time. You develop spiritual stability by consistently reading God’s Word, praying, attending church, hearing preaching, obeying Scripture, and walking with God.
He is planted by the rivers- The tree has a dependable source. The believer’s source is not the world. Our source is God and His Word.
He brings forth fruit
His leaf shall not wither
IV. THE BLESSED MAN PROSPERS IN GOD’S WILL
V. THE WICKED WILL FACE GOD’S JUDGMENT
There is coming a day when every person will stand before God.
“For God shall bring every work into judgment…” — Ecclesiastes 12:14
“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” — Hebrews 9:27
The world doesn’t like to hear about judgment, but the Bible doesn’t apologize for it. There is a judgment coming. The only hope for a sinner is Jesus Christ.
VII. GOD KNOWS THE WAY OF THE RIGHTEOUS
God knows the way of the righteous. That doesn’t merely mean God knows facts about them. It carries the thought of God’s knowledge, care, and recognition of their way.
The righteous person has a way. The ungodly person has a way. And eventually, those two ways lead to two different destinations.
CONCLUSION: WHICH WAY ARE YOU WALKING? Do you want to be blessed or do you want to take the way of the unrighteous.
