Introduction: In Ephesians 2:1-3 we see a life without Christ, things we used to be and do without Christ in our lives. Then in verse 4 we see “But God”, great words to go from a life without Christ to a life with Christ, what a contrast! Now that we are in Christ, we have the following benefits.
A Life with Christ includes:
- The Mercy of God– “who is rich in mercy”. Mercy is the act of sparing, or the forbearance of a violent act expected. Mercy withholds the judgment we deserve. What we really deserve is Hell but because of God’s mercy, in Jesus Christ, we don’t get what we deserve. The mercy of God spared us from a life we deserved.
- Psalm 86:5 “For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee”.
- Psalm 25:7, Luke 6:36, Proverbs 11:17 “The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh”.
2.The Love of God– “for his great love wherewith he loved us”.
- John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that showier believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
- Romans 5:6-10 Christ died for the ungodly, those without strength, for his enemies. That’s the Love of God. Luke 19:10 Christ came to seek and to save sinners. That’s the love of God. I John 4:19 “We love him, because he first loved us”.
3. The Grace of God– “by grace ye are saved”. We have a new spiritual position in Christ. Grace is the free unmerited love and favor of God.
- Romans 3:24-26, Romans 5:15 “But not as the offense, so also is the free gift. For if through the offense of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many”. Titus 2:11 “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men.” Titus 3:7
4. The Kindness of God– “in his kindness toward us”.
- Joel 2:13 “And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repented him of the evil”. Jonah 4:2.
5. The Gift of God– “it is the gift of God”. Romans 5:15-16, II Corinthians 9:15
6. The Workmanship of God– “For we are his workmanship”. This is speaking of us, we are God’s workmanship, his masterpiece or handiwork. God is constantly shaping believers into the image of Christ. Philippians 2:12-13, 2 Corinthians 5:17 Because we are a new creature in Christ, we should walk in a path of good works- Titus 2:14.
