Introduction: In these three verses we are going to see a clear picture of the lost sinner. This is how we used to be and this is how lost sinners are right now, without Jesus Christ.
Our life without Jesus Christ had us:
Dead in trespasses and sins- First of all, we were “quickened” which means we were made alive. Why did we need to be made alive, because we were dead in trespasses and sins. At salvation, the “dead” sinner is made alive by the Holy Spirit of God. All humans have a body, soul, and spirit. The sinner’s spirit is dead, but his body and soul are alive (sinners are dead spiritually). Genesis 2:17 “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” When Adam ate of the fruit something died, that was his spirit. Trespasses- voluntary transgression of the moral law, violation of a known rule of duty. Sins- Drinking, smoking, cussing, going to bad places, etc. Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”.
Walking according to the course of this world- The course of the world is contrary to God. John 1:10 “He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not”. John 15:18-19. Following the course of this world is to follow fame, success, riches, position, pleasures, opinions, selfishness, and popularity. Matthew 16:26 “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” Notice “Wherein in time past”. This is something we used to do and don’t do anymore as Christians. This world has a course and as Christians we have a course, and it is in opposite directions. I John 5:4 “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”
Walking according to the prince of the power of the air- the devil is our adversary according to Ephesians 6:11-12. The devil is the prince of this world- John 14:30The devil is a spirit working “IN the children of disobedience”. Notice- “the spirit”. Just like the Holy Spirit works in the life of a believer- Matthew 12:43 “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.” John 8:44 “ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do”.
Conversing in the lusts of our flesh- Our conversation is more than words coming out our mouth. It has to do with how we behave- Ephesians 4:22 “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts”. James 1:13-15 “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”
Fulfilling the desires of the flesh and mind- We walked in the old man doing the things we thought of and this body desired. Everything about this flesh is bad. Flesh- Fornication, gluttony, laziness (waking up late/not wanting to study this Bible). Mind- Immoral thoughts, lying, anger, envy, false beliefs. Galatians 5:16-17. Romans 6:6
In Nature of Wrath- We are born by nature children of wrath. Then we become children of disobedience- vs 1. And when we believe in Jesus Christ, we become children of God. This person acts against God, rejects God, ignores God, denies God, curses God, etc. Psalm 51:5 “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me”. Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Conclusion: This is what a world without Christ is. Tell others about Christ so they can be transformed.
