Introduction: One of the greatest events in history and Christianity occurred on the cross of calvary when Jesus Christ died for the sins of the entire world.
The last words of Jesus Christ from the cross:
- Show His Forgiveness– Luke 23:33-34 “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them”. To forgive is to pardon, to remit, to overlook an offense. Jesus Christ is a forgiving God. For doubting him- vs 35. For mocking him- vs 36
For Rejecting their Messiah and Saviour- their savior was right in front of the them and they didn’t recognize him.
Application: Jesus Christ forgave us everything on the Cross of Calvary. Can we not forgive those that have trespassed against us.
Colossians 2:13 “And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses”.
Colossians 3:13 “ Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any; even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye”.
- Show His Suffering over Sin– Matthew 27:46 “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Jesus Christ became sin for us who knew no sin. And Jesus Christ suffered over sin, someone had to put on death and pay for it.
II Corinthians 5:21- “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him”.
Isaiah 53:10 “Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him: he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul and offering for sin”.
Isaiah 59:2 “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear”.
Application: It grieves God when we sin. Our sin is what nailed Jesus Christ to the Cross. We serve a Holy God who is separate from sin. Keep a short list of your sin and confess it and forsake it. I John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”.
- Show His Care and Concern– John 19:26-27 “Woman, behold thy Son…behold thy mother. Jesus Christ entrusted the car of Mary to the disciple John. Jesus is concerned in the very details of our earthly problems. Even while in agony Jesus honors family responsibility.
I Peter 5:7 “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you”.
Psalm 62:8 “Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us”.
Application: Jesus Christ cares about everything going on in your life, from the smallest thing to the biggest thing. Go to Him. Hym 353 Leave it There.
- Show His Suffering and Humanity– John 19:28 “I thirst” physical suffering as stated in scripture.
Jesus knows our pain because he has been there- Hebrews 4:14-16 “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the. Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.”
Application: Jesus Christ has been through everything that we will ever go through, you can trust Him, and go to Him, all the time for help and encouragement.
- Show His Victory and Completion– John 19:30 “It is finished”. You don’t have to add to what Jesus Christ already did.
The work of redemption was complete- Galatians 3:13 “Christ hath redeemed us from the curst of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree”.
Sins debt paid- Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”.
Colossians 2:13-15
Application: The Finished work of Christ is enough. Don’t try to get to him through your works. Jesus Christ paid the debt in full.
- Show His Trust of the Father– Luke 23:46 “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit”.
Perfect obedience and trust of the Father to the end.
Application: death is going from this life to be with the Father in heaven- After death is eternity with the Father for those who have believed on Jesus Christ.
II Corinthians 5:8 “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord”.
- Show His Promise of Salvation– Luke 23:43 “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise”. Promising the thief eternal life. This thief was repentant, while the other mocked God. This thief believed in Jesus Christ. Didn’t have time to get down and get baptized.
Salvation is by grace through faith- Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast”.
John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”.
Matthew 7:8 “For everyone that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened”. You have not because ye ask not- James 4:2.
Application: If you believe in Jesus Christ and receive Him, He will give you eternal life. Jesus Christ is the only way, don’t trust in yourself or other things. All you have to do is ask him to save you and He will.
Conclusion: These are the last words of Jesus Christ on the cross.
