Introduction: God brought judgment against Sodom and Gomorrah because of their sin and the Bible says that it is an example unto us. The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah- Genesis 19:1, 13, 17, 24.
The destruction is an Example unto us- II Peter 2:6 “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensemble unto those that after should live ungodly”. This was God’s judgment on their sin.
God destroyed Sodom because:
- Of Their Pride– The first reason why God destroyed Sodom is because of their pride. Pride is to to value one’s self; to gratify self-esteem. Money; Career; Accomplishments (names in buildings); Education (PhD; Position in the community. Big houses, name brand cars, name brand clothing, etc.
- Provers 13:10 “Only by pride cometh contention”.
- I John 2:16 “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world”.
- Proverbs 6:17 “These six things doth the LORD hat: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look”.
- Proverbs 28:25 “He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife”.

- Of their Fulness of Bread– We live in the United States of America where there is no lack of bread, a restaurant in every corner. We eat and over eat and eat some more, we find any excuse to eat. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, with some snack in-between. Buffet restaurants where we can eat to fullness. Pantries full of food. Fridges full of food. We should fast every once in a while. What is fasting , abstaining from food for spiritual purposes. We should do this more often. Matthew 6:1-18 “when thou doest thine alms, when thou prays, when ye fast”. Isaiah 58:6-9 we are given the benefits of fasting.
- Of their Abundance of Idleness– Facebook, Craigslist, Tik Tok, Video games. What is idleness- aversion to labor, reluctance to be employed, laziness, sloth, sluggish. The Field of the Slothful- Proverbs 24:30 (Slothful- Inactive, sluggish, lazy, Idle.
- They had No Concern for the Poor and Needy– Poor- The command for them was to help the poor. Deuteronomy 15:11 “For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.” Psalm 41:1 “Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. Proverbs 19:17 “He that hat pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again”. Proverbs 28:27 “He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes hall have many a curse”. The people in the nursing home are needy, we cannot stop going over there and giving it our best for them.
- Of their Haughtiness– The quality of being haughty; pride mingled with some degree of contempt for others; arrogance. Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall”.
- Committed Abomination– Sodomy- Genesis 19:4-7 the men of the city wanted to be with the angels physically and Lot said “do not so wickedly”. Sodomy- a crime against nature. Romans 1:22-27. Jude 1:7 “Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire”. Fornication- Sex before marriage and sex outside of marriage. Marriage between same sex couples.
- Married through the state or through the church. The Catholic church has said “The Catholic church will continue to allow “blessing” for same sex couples but not recognition for their unions as marriages under Pope Leo”.
Conclusion: If any of these things are in you, get them out, you don’t want to be destroyed by God like Sodom was destroyed.
