Ephesians 1:15-23 “Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers”.
Introduction: These are the prayer request that the Apostle Paul made for the Ephesians.
Paul Prayed the Ephesians would:
- Have Spiritual Wisdom and Revelation– Vs 17 “the spirit of wisdom and revelation”. The spirit of wisdom and revelation come from the Spirit of God. God wrote the Word of God and when we don’t understand something in there, the Spirit of God can show us. The believer is indwelt by the Spirit of God- John 14:16-17; 14:26; 16:12-15.
- The spirit of Wisdom- Wisdom is how to use the knowledge that you already have. Knowing what to do and how to do it, Proverbs 1:2-7 and James 1:5; 3:17.
- Revelation- to manifest, to reveal, to unveil, to uncover. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to reveal the knowledge of God to Christians. I Corinthians 2:9-16; It is the Holy Spirit who reveals God to the believer. John 17:3 “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent”.
- Have the Eyes of their Understanding Enlightened– Vs 18 “the eyes of your understanding, enlightened”. I Samuel 14:27 and Luke 24:31, Psalm 119:18; 130
- Know the hope of his Calling– Vs 18 “know what is the hope of his calling”. The hope of our calling is Christ himself- Hebrews 6:18. Jesus Christ is the one who will meet us in the air- Titus 2:13. Jesus will also fulfill the hope of Romans 8:20-24 and Colossians 1:5, 23, 27.
- Know The Riches of His Inheritance– Vs 18 “the riches of the glory of his inheritance”. Ephesians 1:11; 14. I Peter 1:4 “To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away received in heaven for you”. God the Father has an inheritance- Psalm 28:9; 33:12; 68:9; 78:62; 78:71; 94:14; 106:5, 40.
- Know His Mighty Power– Vs 19 “the exceeding greatness of his power”. The very power that raised Jesus from the dead is available for our daily lives- Romans 8:10-11. The same power that put the Lord Jesus in His present geographical location, vs 20; Colossians 3:1 resides on this earth in “earthen vessels”. I Corinthians 3:16. If Christ did it, we can do it also.
Conclusion: These are the things that Paul prayed for the Ephesians. This prayer is also good for us to pray.
