Introduction: This passage of Scripture shows us that if we love Jesus Christ, we will keep his commandments. We will do what he says to do and not do what he says not to do. Love for God is not simply a feeling or an emotion, it is obedient action to what He says. This is the true measure of our love for Jesus Christ.
If you love Jesus Christ you must:
- Love Others – Matthew 22:36-40 Love your neighbor and others- John 13:34-35 “A new commandments I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have love you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another”.
- Not Worry– Matthew 6:25-34 “take no thought for your life”. God will supply food and clothing for his children. The solution is to seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness.
- Repent– Matthew 4:17 To Repent is to Turn from sin and turn unto God. The prodigal son asked his father for his inheritance and left into the far country and spend his life in riotous living. He then repented, that is, he turned from his ways and went back to his father. Sin is fun and pleasurable however, Jesus wants you to repent because sin will lead to death. Ecclesiastes 7:17 “Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?”
- Pray for Laborers– Matthew 9:35-38 Jesus was preaching and teaching to people all over. The people were fainting and were scattered as sheep without a shepherd and because of all this, Jesus recognized, the harvest is plenteous but the laborers are few. Solution: pray for more laborers. Churches are closing its doors, men are not heeding the call to preach/pastor, men and women are not going to the mission field as they used to years ago.
- Obey the Authority– Mark 12:13-17 Jesus is talking about obeying the authority/local government. We must surrender to the power or will of another, that is the government. Romans 13:1-7 God is the one who has ordained the higher powers to be his ministers to this that do good and to punish those that do evil. Furthermore, if we resist the power, we are resisting the power of God. In I Peter 2:13-14 we are to submit to every ordinance of man “for the Lord’s sake”. In other words, the human government has been put in place by God, and we are to submit ourselves to any request or requirement for the Lord’s sake. That includes paying our taxes as stated here by Jesus Christ.
- Preach the Gospel – Mark 16:15 We are to open our mouths and declare the gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world. Take Bible Tracts and NT Bibles, do what it takes to preach the gospel.
- Forgive Others– Luke 17:1-4 To forgive is to pardon; to remit, as an offense or debt; to overlook an offense, and treat the offender as not guilty. Joseph who is a picture of Jesus Christ forgave his brothers after everything they did to him, even sold him into slavery. Genesis 50:19-21 “And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive…and he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.”
- Be Born Again– John 3:7
Conclusion: The commands of God must be obeyed. Luke 6:46 “why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the thing which I say”. This is how you prove your love for God, if you keep his commandments.
