Introduction: A daily quiet time alone with God is crucial to the Christian life. This time will allow a Christian to grow his relationship, fellowship, and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Genesis 19:27 “And Abraham got up early in the morning morning to the place where he stood before the Lord”.
- The Quiet Time– vs 27“And Abraham got up early in the morning”. Early in the morning is perhaps one of the best times to have a quiet time. The first things we start off our day with will usually dominate our thoughts and mind for the remainder of the day. If you can’t have your quiet time in the morning, find another convenient time in the day that works best with your schedule.
- The Quiet Place– vs 27 “to the place where he stood before the Lord”. Abraham had designated a familiar place where he got alone with God. That place can be a room, closet, outdoors, etc. Speaking of Jesus, He had a solitary place away from everything and everyone else- Mark 1:35 “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed”. The plan should be quiet and free from distractions.
- The Quiet Frequency– David did this daily- Psalm 5:3 “My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto Thee, and will look up”. Jesus did this at least twice a day- Luke 6:12 he “continued all night in prayer to God”.
- The Quiet Purpose– In this life of busyness, demands, and distractions, we can miss our quiet time with God.
- To grow in our knowledge- The more time we spend with our Lord, the stronger our bond and relationship will get with Him and the more we will get to know Him- II Peter 3:18 “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ”.
- To get still before God- Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I Am God”. If Jesus needed a quiet time before the Father, how much more do we need it.
- To get direction for the day- Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path”. John 15:5 “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringers forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing”.
- The Quiet Prayer– We speak to God through prayer and He hears us. Our quiet time should start with prayer. Philippians 4:6-7 “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known unto God”.
- Adoration- Give God credit and glory for His goodness. He Loves That!
- Confession- Tell God where you fall short, repent and forsake that sin. I John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”
- Thanksgiving- Thank God for who He is and what He does for you personally.
- Supplication- Take your specifics petitions to God and make supplication, that is, humble and earnest prayer or petition.
- The Quiet Bible Reading– God speaks to us through His Word. This allows us to hear the “still small voice”- I Kings 19:12 “And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice”. I Samuel 15:1 “Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD”- the Words of this Bible have a voice. This reading helps us stay protected from sin- Psalm 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee”.
- The Quiet Correction– When we read this Bible, it is like a mirror- James 1:22-25. It will show us where we fall short and it will allow us to get right with God. Allow God to correct you and comply with His commands. Psalm 51:7 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise”.
- The Quiet Meditation– To meditate is to dwell on, to contemplate, to consider. Psalm 104:34 “My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD”. Think about what you read. Psalm 77:12 “I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings”.
- The Quiet Time Materials– your Bible and a Pen with Paper. I read along with the Scourby Bible app- Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing but he word of God”. No other distractions. What has God shown you? A command to obey; an example to follow; an error to avoid; a sin to forsake; a promise to claim; someone to forgive, etc.
Conclusion: If you already have a quiet time, don’t stop. If you don’t have a quiet time with God, start soon and watch how the Lord will use this time to be a great benefit in your life. You will be blessed tremendously.
