Introduction: In the Bible you find several places where we are given specific instruction regarding our walk. Our walk is a figurative description of the Christian life; it is our way of life; our manner of living.
The Christian Must Walk:
- In God’s Commandments– Deuteronomy 5:33 “Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you”. God’s requirement for the nation of Israel was that they obeyed him and did what He said. The point here is that God is concerned about the heart-obedience.
- In this Bible is found all the commandments of God. We are to read it, study it, meditate in it, and most importantly do what it says. James 1:22-25 “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves”.
- Results of walking in God’s commandments: you will live, it will be well with you, it will prolong your days, it will keeps us in the fear of the Lord, it will increase you mightily. It will show we love God, we will have true fellowship with Christ, and blessings and long life.
- In the Light– I John 1:5-7 “But if we walk in the light”. In the Bible darkness is the universal symbol and condition of sin. In contrast, light is an attribute of holiness. There are certain expectations from God in regards to how He wants us to live here on earth.
- If we walk in darkness and say we walk in truth- we are liars.
- Man cannot have fellowship with God if he walks in darkness.
- Results of walking in the light- “But if we walk in the light”- we have fellowship with Jesus Christ and other Christians; cleansing from sin; live by the truths of Jesus Christ, there is confession and ongoing cleansing by Christ’s blood, it produces godly fruit and we avoid the works of darkness. It will make us good examples to other Christians.
- In the Truth-III John 3-4 “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth”. This man Gaius walked in the truth of Jesus Christ and in the truth of God’s Words- John 17:17 “Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth”.
- To walk in the truth is to live honestly and without hypocrisy. The way you act matches with what you say. You walk in integrity- doing what is right even when no one is watching. We are commanded to do so.
- We should speak the truth all the time, walk in the truth, declare the truth, come to the truth, obey the truth.
- When you walk in the truth it will make you free, sanctify you, purify you.
- John 16:13 “howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth”. the Holy Spirit will lead you into all truth if you yield to Him.
- In Love– Ephesians 5:2 “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us”. God’s love is demonstrated sacrificially.
- We love others when we put others first. When we feed others. When we give our money, time, and resources. When we walk as Jesus walked. When we are kind and tenderhearted. Unselfish. Brotherly concern. When we serve others. When you love your neighbor as yourself.
- I Corinthians 13 charity is a love that gives. A love in action.
- Without Fear- Psalm 23:4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil”. We can walk even in the darkest times without fear because God is present with us. We are never alone- Hebrews 13:5 “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee”.
- Instead of fearing, we have power, love, sound mind, God’s promises, belief in God and his truth, II Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”.
- Acts 4:13 and Acts 21:10-14
- By Faith– II Corinthians 5:7 “For we walk by faith, not by sight”. Hebrews 11:32-40 these people had tremendous faith and because of it they were able to accomplish great things for God. How is our faith, small or great? When we think about what God wants to do with us and through us, sometimes we limit God because we see and focus on the impossible. We must live by faith to do great things for God.
Conclusion: This is the way that a Christian should walk on this earth. How is your walk?
