Introduction: This lesson is regarding the eternal security of the believer, a Biblical doctrine. After a person believes on the Lord Jesus Christ by faith, that person must have the assurance that they are saved and cannot loose their salvation.
Regarding Eternal Security:
1. What is It- Eternal security is having the assurance and confidence that you are saved from hell and at the moment of death, you will be immediately present with Jesus Christ in heaven. II Corinthians 5:8 “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord”. If you have eternal life, then you are saved. John 10:28-29 “And I give unto them eternal life: and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand”.
2. You can Know It – I John 5:13 “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God: that ye may know that ye have eternal life”. Many of the responses you hear today after asking someone if they are saved is “I think so”, “I hope so”, “Only God knows”, “no one can really know for sure”. Either you believed in Jesus Christ as your person savior or you did not. John 1:12 “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God”. John 3:36 “He that believeth on the son hath everlasting life”. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life”.
3. It’s not based on Works- John 10:28 “And I give unto them eternal life: and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand”. Jesus Christ is the one who gives eternal life, it is not earned by being a good person or giving money to the church. Ephesians 2:8-10 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
4. It’s not based on a Feeling but on these things:
The Witness of the Holy Spirit- Romans 8:16 “The Spirt itself bearers witness with our spirit that we are the children of God”. When a person believes on Jesus Christ the Holy Spirit of God takes residence in the life of the believer and gives him peace, rest, and assurance. Galatians 4:6 “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hears, crying, Abba, Father”.
The Witness of the Word of God- Numbers 23:19; John 5:24, Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved”.
Your Witness to Others- When a person is saved he is a new creature in Christ- II Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”. New friends, new vocabulary, new places, new likes and dislikes. We will see the change in us and others will see the change that has taken place in us. I John 3:14 “We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren”. This happens when the fruit of the Spirit is present in the believer and being manifested through us to others- Galatians 5:22.
5. You Cannot Lose It- once a person believes in Jesus Christ, that person cannot lose their salvation. Since eternal security is not based on something that we do but on what Jesus Christ did for us, it cannot be take away- Romans 8:38-39 “shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ”. Ephesians 4:30 “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” John 10:27-30 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”
6. It is Not a License to Sin- Romans 6:1-2 “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?”
7. The Reasons Christians Doubt Their Salvation:
Because they believe the Devil’s lies- John 8:44 “and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it”.
Because they don’t trust the Word of God- People need to pray and ask God to increase their faith just like the disciples when Jesus confronted them with forgiveness in Luke 17:1-5.
Because of Sin- some Christians are living far away from God and in their sin they begin to doubt if they were truly born again. Get right with God I John 1:9.
Because of Worldliness- The love of the world chokes the desire for spiritual things like God, prayer and reading our Bible.
Conclusion: If you doubt your salvation, get with God and get it settled. If you come across someone who doubts their salvation, hopefully this will be a help to you in dealing with them.
