Introduction: In this message we will find different places in the Bible where the Word of God is likened unto something. This is the reason why as Bible Believers, we exalt the Word of God and encourage you to read it daily.
The Bible is Likened unto a:
1. Burning Fire: Jeremiah 20:9 “But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones”. Jeremiah 23:29 “ls not My Word like as a fire? saith the LORD.” In this passage of scripture we see the prophet Jeremiah discouraged, persecuted, and on the verge of quitting the ministry God gave him. Have you heard, “he’s on fire for God”? When you read and hear the Word of God it ignites a fire in you to do something great for God. Fire keeps the heart warm and tender to the things of the Lord. Fire also gives light to others. Preachers that preach the word of God and know as “hell fire and brimstone” preachers because it burns the heart of the hearer. A cold heart is the opposite, rejects the things of God and doesn’t do much for God.
2. Breaking Hammer: Jeremiah 23:29 “…and like a hammer that breath the rock in pieces”. Job 19:1-2 “Then Job answered and said, How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?” The heart of man gets hard because of sin in their life and it must be broken with the hammer of the word of God. Zechariah 7:12 “Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts”. If your heart has gotten hard to the things of God, allow His word to break it up and make it usable. It may not be pleasant but it’s necessary.
3. Guiding Lamp: Psalm 119:105- “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Have you been in a dark room? You stumble through it and end up with a lot of bruises. It’s better to have a lamp to know where you’re going. This Bible gives you enough light to illuminate your next step of life. Without reading this Bible you don’t have light and you cannot take the correct next step in life. Proverbs 6:23 “For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life”. We make life changing decision weekly, we cannot afford making those decisions without the lamp of God illuminating our steps. Guiding Light– II Peter 1:19 “ We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place…” A lamp gives us enough light to light what is in front of us to take another step but a light will illuminate the path ahead of us so we can see dangers that are approaching or a crossroads up ahead.
5. A Seed: Luke 8:5 “A sower went out to sow his seed..” Luke 8:11-15 – a seed that is sown will fall by “the wayside” vs 12, on “the rock” vs 13, “among thorns” vs 14, or on “good ground” vs 15. The seed that falls on good ground brings forth fruit “some thirty fold, some sixty, and some an hundred” Mark 4:20. A couple things regarding the seed: we are the sowers that need to go sow seed (the word of God, not our opinion). Once the seed (word) goes out, it brings forth fruit in the life of a person. Be patient, it’s just a matter of time. Pass out tracts and NT Bibles. Keep witnessing to others, don’t give up, God’s Word doesn’t return void. Isaiah 55:11 “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it”.
6. Sharp Sword– Ephesians 6:17 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”. This is not only an offensive weapon but a defensive weapon. It must be sharp, straight, and oiled up, not rusted, bent, and dirty. Jesus Christ used the Word of God against the devil when he was tempted of the devil. Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart”. The Bible is a pointed Word that convicts those that heart it. It must be memorized and hidden in the heart to be used it daily. We must preach and witness to others then God takes the word of God and cut’s into the heart of man to convict them of their sin.
7. Nourishing Food: Hebrews 5:12-14 The Bible is nourishing food that keeps the soul full. Mathew 4:4 “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God”. For young born again Christians, like baby’s, they require milk-“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby” I Peter 2:2. As the Christian grows spiritually, then they can eat meat. “I have fed you with milk, and not with meat” 1 Corinthians 3:2. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” Romans 10:17. You don’t want to be a malnourished Christian that is weak and frail because he hasn’t eaten in weeks, months, or years. Stay in the Word of God!
8. A Reflecting Mirror: James 1:22-25- When we read this Bible it reflects everything about us like a mirror. It points out every character flaw, every sin, every bad thing, etc. We see a true reflection of our selves and we must adapt to God’s word. We can’t just be a hearer of the word, we must be a doer of the Word. The mirror doesn’t lie.
Conclusion: This message is not only practical but also spiritual and can be of great application in the life of a believer.
