Jesus is the Image of the Invisible God– vs 15 “Who is the image of the invisible God”. God is invisible or unseen, but Jesus Christ reveals God to the world.
God the Father is a Spirit, and no one has seen him- John 1:18 “No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.” John 4:24 “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
Jesus Christ his Son is His image, who was manifest in the flesh- John 14:8-9, “Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?
Jesus is the Firstborn of Every Creature– vs 15 “the firstborn of every creature”. Jesus Christ is the firstborn of every creature born of God himself. How did this happen? Luke 1:34-35 “Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. Genesis 5:1-3 Every other human being was born of Adam, who was created by God, therefore making us in the image of Adam.
Jesus is the Creator of All Things– vs 16 “For by him were all things created”. John 1:3 and John 1:1.
Things in Heaven- Genesis 1:14-19 Fourth day of Creation- Sun, moon, stars.
Things on Earth- Genesis 1:20-23 Fifth day of Creation- birds, insects, fishes.
Things Visible and Invisible- Angels which can be seen- Genesis 18:2, 16 and Cherub and Seraphim which cannot be seen- Exodus 25:20 and Isaiah 6:2 “Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.” Ezekiel 1:6 “And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings.”
Thrones, Dominions, Principalities, Powers- These are evil powers- Ephesians 6:12 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Jesus is Eternal– vs 17 “And he is before all things”. This means that God has always existed, he is eternal. God is without beginning and already existed before creation. John 1:2 “The same was in the beginning with God”. Revelation 22:13 “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last”.
Jesus is the Sustainer– vs 17 “by him all things consist”. Jesus Christ didn’t just create everything and let it be, He holds all things together. Energy, force, power, order, et. Consider gravity.
Hebrews 1:3 “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:”
Jesus is the Head of the Body, The Church– vs 18 “And he is the head of the body, the church”. Colossians 1:24; Ephesians 1:22-23 “And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.”
Ephesians 5:23 “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body”.
