Purpose Yourself in 2026 (Matthew 6:31-33)

Introduction: This is the first Sunday in 2026. This is the time in which many people make new year resolutions. Many of them are physical and have to do with loosing weight, get healthier, make more money, get more active in the community, etc. Those things are not bad however, do you have a spiritual resolution? If you don’t, you may want to consider the following things you can purpose to do in 2026.

To purpose: is that which a person sets before himself as an object to be reached or accomplished.

This New Year, as Christians, we should Purpose to

  1. Seek God First– Matthew 6:31- 33 to seek is to go after, to pursue, to desire, to search for. The people that are lost are seeking for money, houses, furnishings, food, cars, televisions, toys, clothings, recreation places, places to travel. These things are not bad but when that’s what they seek first, instead of the Kingdom of God, theres the problem. These things give comfort, entertainment, power fame or recognition and are fleshly.
  1. To do Good Works– Matthew 5:14-16 we understand that we don’t work to get saved but we work because we are saved. We are to “do good unto all men”. We are to follow Christ is doing good works. Good works get the approval of God. Righteous actions, deeds of kindness, and obedience to God’s commands. Clean, sing, teach children VBS, serve others. Your good works should always point people to Jesus Christ so that He gets the glory.
  1. Love Others– John 13:34-35 This is a spiritual love between believers. A love that bind his life to the life of other believers. A love that denies self completely. A love that puts others first. A love that sacrifices himself for others.  A love that forgives other believers. A love that surrenders his will and to be of the same mind as others- Unity.
  1. Meditate in God’s Word– Joshua 1:8 (meditate- is to dwell on; contemplate, or think on). When we meditate and observe (do) what it says to do, then; Your life will be Prosperous Your life will have good Success- this is the only time in the KJV where this word appears. Success is inseparable from God’s Word.
  1. Pray and Give Thanks– I Thessalonians 5:17-18 These two go hand in hand. Every time we pray we should give thanks to God for anything and everything. Prayer is how a believer gets a hold of God. Prayer stirs fellowship and communion with God.
  1. Be Holy in all Manner of Conversation– I Peter 1:15-16 to be holy is to be pure, righteous, godly. We should be Holy because God is Holy- “Be ye holy; for I am holy”. God has called believers to be holy in all of life. People that will be just like Him.

Conclusion: If we can purpose ourselves to do these things and continue in these things, this new year will be a good year.
