Introduction: In this passage of scripture, we see the importance of what God has done for us through his Son Jesus Christ. It reveals the supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ, and it shows us who Jesus Christ is and the work he did for mankind on the cross, specifically those who believe on Him as their person savior.
1. God has Given us an Inheritance– Vs 12 an inheritance is something that is possessed or enjoyed. An estate derived from an ancestor to an heir. When you believe in Jesus Christ, you become a Child of God and an heir of his inheritance.
Heirs of Eternal Life- That’s forever. Titus 3:7 “That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life”. John 3:16 “everlasting life”.
Heirs of an Immortal and Perfect Body- I Cor 15:50-54
Heirs of a New Heaven and New Earth- Revelation 21:1-4 we will spend time with God face to face vs 3 and it will be amazing vs 4.
2. God has Delivered us and Translated us– Vs 13 the second thing we see that God did for us is:
Delivered us from the power of darkness- before we were in darkness, but God rescued/saved us from that. We were enslaved to Satan and sin. This darkness is a spiritual realm and a power- Ephesians 6:12 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
John 1:4-5 and John 3:19 in darkness there are evil deeds.
Translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son– we were transferred into God’s kingdom.
Acts 26:18 “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.”
John 3:3 “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”.
Luke 17:20-21 “And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” The kingdom of God is not physical, it is spiritual and inside a believer.
3. God has Redeemed us, forgiven our sin– Vs 14 to redeem is to purchase back, to ransom, to liberate or rescue from captivity or bondage. This redemption took place by nothing less than the blood of Jesus Christ.
Redeemed through His Blood- I Peter 1:18-19 “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”
John 1:29 “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
Forgiven our Sins- Romans 4:7 “Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.” I John 2:12 “I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.”
Conclusion: These are some things that God has done for men. Thanks be to God that after we believed in Jesus Christ, we have these things.
