How to Overcome Sin (Romans 6:11)

Introduction: This morning we want to see from the Bible how a Christian can overcome sin. Many Christians today live in the Mary-go-round of sin, that is they sin, ask God to forgive them, but shortly after do it again. Over and over again. What we have to understand is that God didn’t create us to live this way. We can and should have victory over sin.

You Can Overcome Sin If:

  1. You Don’t Hide Sin– Proverbs 28:13 “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy”. Your sin is yours and not anyone else. Don’t blame or cover up your sin. Bring it to God and forsake it. Will Not Prosper- grow, increase, succeed, thrive. People cover their sin by hiding, lying, blaming others, covering up, doing good things.
  2. You Realize Your Dead to Sin– Romans 6:11 we must count ourselves dead unto sin.  Romans 6:6-10 “For he that is dead is freed from sin”. Galatians 2:20 “I am crucified with Christ…Christ liveth in me”. Sin’s power was broken at Calvary. I am dead to sin, the old man is dead and buried and the new man is made alive. II Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”.
  3. You Yield Yourself to God– Romans 6:13, 16. You have a choice to yield to sin or to righteousness. To Yield is to “comply with, to give place to, to not oppose”. Vs 16 servant of sin- unrighteousness, iniquity. Servant of obedience, righteousness. The choice is yours. Romans 12:1-2 present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God”. Your members are the physical parts of your body: Take my mouth, eyes, feet, and use them for your service.
  4. You Walk in the Spirit– Romans 8:5-8 The sinful, carnal mind is set on fleshly desires. Lust for sex, money, power, houses, position, recognition. The Spiritual mind, is set on spiritual desires that please God. Galatians 5:22-23 the fruit of the spirit. Knowing and understanding God. Ephesians 4:22-24
  5. You Take the Way of Escape– I Corinthians 10:13 God is always faithful to provide a way of escape from temptations. The temptation can come from the devil, the flesh, or the world. Regardless, a Christian must find that door of escape to leave the area. James 1:12 “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him”.
  6. You Judge Your Sin– I Corinthians 11:31-32 The believer has two choices, he can judge themselves, admitting their sin and asking for God’s cleansing – I John 1:9 or ignore the sin and allow God to judge them. The consequences to this are physical chastisement and even death. This will affect a Christians reward at the judgment seat of Christ.
  7. You Sow to the Spirit- Galatians 6:7-8 a person always reaps more than he sows. If you plant a fig, you will have 50 figs. If you sow (plant) seeds of sin, you will reap corruption. If you sow (plant) seeds of righteousness, will reap rewards from God.
  8. You Stay in God’s Word– Psalm 119:11 “thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee”. Most Christians that get into sin will say that it’s because they stopped reading their Bible a long time ago. John 15:7 “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you”. If these words are in you and you are in them, sin cannot reign where Christ reigns.

Conclusion: If you’re thinking about going a different direction from God, repent. Don’t go back to your sin but rather turn from it. If you do these things, you can overcome Sin.
