Introduction: These 70 disciples were sent out by the Lord Jesus Christ to accomplish a specific task and we can learn from their example.
The Mission of the 70 Disciples Was:
- To Go to Every City– Vs 1 “sent them two and two before his face into every city and place”. These forerunners of the Lord Jesus Christ were to go to every city, just keep going where the Spirit led. Acts 1:8 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth”. It starts in Kingsville, then Texas, then United States, then the World. We are to reach out to our own city first and foremost, if we can’t do that, how can we expect to be a missionary in a foreign place. We go where we can go and where we can’t go, we send missionaries. We support financially those that are going to every city.
- To Pray For Laborers– Vs 2 “Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest”. Pray because there is a great harvest- John 4:35 “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest”. Pray because laborers are few- Christians are quitting left and right. Pray because the need is urgent- “the field is white already to harvest”. People don’t need philosophy, psychology, or man’s ways. Pray because God needs to send his laborers- This is God’s work and He needs His laborers.
- To Deal with Antagonist– Vs 3 “ I send you forth as lambs among wolves”. An antagonist is one who apposes in combat, one who contends against. Wolves- People are wolves, they will attack you, intimidate you, quiet you, scare you, put you down, etc. They will hunt you and attack you. They would kill if you could. Sheep- meek, harmless, non-combative. Philippians 1:29 “For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake”. Acts 20:28-31 “For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock”.
- To Trust God and Be Urgent– Vs 4 This is something we should all learn. They were take only what they had. They were to trust in God completely for food, clothing, provision, and a roof over their head. Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”. It was urgent- Vs 4” salute no man by the way”. Time is short and there is no time to have needless conversations along the way. Ephesians 5:16 “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil”.
- To Not Force the Message– Vs 5-6 They were to minister to homes where people were interested and to the hospitable families. If there was no peace and they wanted to argue or dispute, just move along. For the sake of the gospel they were to be no divisiveness or accusations. People were left alone without the gospel and without God. God is faithful to send a messenger but if people don’t want to hear, God doesn’t force anyone to accept Him. People have a free will to choose or deny God.
- To Preach the Gospel– Vs 9 “The kingdom of God is come night unto you”.Luke 9:2 Jesus sent the 12 Disciples “And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God”. Sow the Seed- Pass out Tracts, New Testament Bibles, Full Bibles. II Corinthians 5:17-21 ministry and word of reconciliation.
- To Walk Away From Rejectors– Vs 10-15 There would be whole cities rejecting Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God. It came right to their door and they shut the door on God. Judgment is coming and everyone who rejects Jesus Christ is already condemned. John 3:19 “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil”.
- To Always Represent the Lord– Vs 16 II Corinthians 5:20 “Now then tea re ambassadors for Christ”. If they open the door and hear you, share the Word of God- that’s hearing God. If they despise you, don’t get discouraged, it’s NOT you they are rejecting, it’s God. If they despise Christ they despise God the Father and He doesn’t like that.
Conclusion: These things were commanded to the 70 disciples however, we can learn and apply some of these things when we go and continue the work they started.
