Defeating Your Giants (I Samuel 17)

Introduction: I Samuel Chapter 17. The story of a David and Goliath is a familiar story to many Christians. From Junior Church, children are taught practical things from this amazing story. This story encourages the Christian person to face and defeat his giant (Goliath) in life. The giant can be a work problem, family problem, health or money problem, an enemy, or a habitual sin. Regardless of what it is, or what it looks like, this message will show us how to defeat your giant problem.

To Defeat Your Giant, you must:

Look Past the Appearance– Vs 1-8 A problem (Goliath/Giant) will look different to different people. The problem that is the most recent, is the one that looks the biggest at the time. It seems like there is no solution because it looks so big, but you must look past it.

  • Vs 4 Champion and Giant (The Problem is always a BIG ONE).
  • Vs 5 Intimidating Armor (Looks Bad and Mean on the Outside).
  • Vs 7 Large Weapon (Looks like you are no Match for it).
  • Vs 8 Taunting and Defying Others (It makes itself known).
  • I Samuel 16:7 “For the Lord seeth not as man seeth”.

Not Be Afraid– Vs 11 “they were dismayed, and greatly afraid”. The reason why these Philistines were afraid was because they had taken their eyes off of God. Fear is an emotion that will paralyze a person and make them act and react contrary to God. If you fear your enemy, you have already lost. Dismayed- Disheartened; deprived of courage. II Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”. If you have fear, it’s not from God, it’s from self or the devil. Joshua 1:9 “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest”. Deuteronomy 20:1 “When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt”.

Trust in God– Vs 33-37 “The Lord that delivered me out….he will deliver me”. David was confident that would defeat his giant, Goliath because of what God had done before in his life.

The Lion- a picture of Satan. The Bear- a picture of the world, which hugs a man to death. God had been fitting him for this task. From those prior giants to this giant. Look back at every giant God has got you through before. Recount them over and over. Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the lord with ALL thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths”. Psalm 37:5 “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. Vs 7 “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass”.

Fight in the Name of the Lord– Vs 38-45 “ I come to thee in the name of the Lord of host”. Vs 47 “for the battle is the Lord’s. Vs 38-39 Don’t use someone else’s armor use God’s armor.

Ephesians 6 gives us the full armor that we need:

  • Belt of Truth, Breastplate of righteousness, Feet shod with the gospel, shield of faith (protects from the fiery darts of the wicked), Helmet of Salvation (keeps our minds on Christ), Sword of the Spirit (the Word of God), Praying knees. With this FULL Armour of God, you are able to fight in the name of the Lord.

Psalm 18:2 “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower”.

Face Your Giant Head On– Vs 48:54 “David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine”. When you face your giant head on, you will prevail Vs 50 “So David prevailed”.  If you keep running from your giant problems, you will never finish anything in life. In this life we go from one battle to another, it’s never ending, but you never finish the task and deal with the enemy, it will always come back and find you. If God told you to do something, or you had peace and direction from God to start or do something, don’t quit !, deal with he problems head on and move on. Proverbs 28:1 “The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion”.

Conclusion: When you do these things, you will have an opportunity to defeat the giants in your life.
