Proverbs 6:16 “These six things doth the LORD hate…”
Introduction: In this passage of scripture, we see that God hates some things (actions) and even hates the people that are performing those actions vs 19. Have you ever heard a person say, “God hates sin but loves the sinner?”. That is not a biblical statement because the Bible clearly reads that God hates people that are doing certain things that God hates. Psalm 5:5-6 and Psalm 11:5 “The Lord trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth”. Romans 9:13 “As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated”.
God Hates:
1. A Proud Look- Vs 17 a proud look comes from a proud heart- what’s on the inside is what comes out. Isaiah 14:12-14 this is where Lucifer can be seen for who he really is, a proud person full of (I will’s). Proverbs 13:10 “Only by pride cometh contention”. Solution: Proverbs 29:23 “A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit”- pride and humility are opposites, and God is looking for humility instead. Don’t be prideful like the devil, be humble like Jesus Christ.
2. A Lying Tongue- Vs 17 It is never right to lie, in any circumstance. No matter how much it hurts, or how uncomfortable it makes you, or what will happen, never lie about it. Solution: Ephesians 4:25 “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man the truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another”. If you lie, quit lying, put it away.
3. Hands that Shed Innocent Blood- Vs 17 Proverbs 1:10-11 “My son, if sinner entice thee, consent thou not. Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit”. Proverbs 23:7 “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he”- if your thinking about killing someone, but the only thing that is stopping you are the consequences, check your heart before you do something you’ll regret. (driving drunk and killing a family) Solution: Exodus 20:13 “Thou shalt not kill”.
4. Heart that deviseth Wicked Imaginations- Vs 18 Genesis 6:5 God saw the wickedness and the imaginations of man were evil and God decided to drown everything in it. God hates wicked imaginations. Solution: “cast down imaginations” II Corinthians 10:5, get the heart cleaned out of those filthy things that take you on a road of wicked imaginations.
5. Feet that be swift in running to Mischief- Vs 18 Isaiah 59:7-8 these people are running to get into trouble, it’s in them and they are out of control. Solution: Run away from mischief “flee fornication”.
6. False Witness that Speaketh Lies- Vs 19 Exodus 20:16 “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour”. Proverbs 26:28 “A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies”. Solution: Don’t bear false witness- tell the truth. It doesn’t matter what everyone else “is doing”, don’t do it.
7. Soweth Discord Among Brethren- Vs 19 One of the things that will kill a church faster than anything else is this right here, sowing discord among brethren. Solution: It’s better to keep your mouth shut. If someone comes to you and wants to sow discord, don’t listen to them- Proverbs 26:20 “Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth”. Why does your church do that, believe in that, dress like that, etc.
Conclusion: If God hates these things, we should hate them too. If you are this person or are doing these things, line up with God and hate it like God hates it, and get rid of it.
