Jesus Christ The “I AM” (John 6:33-35)

Introduction: In this lesson we will see the Lord Jesus Christ say of himself “I am”, followed by what he is. This was a constant reminder for his disciples and other people that He was God manifested in the flesh and it’s also a good reminder for us also.

Jesus Christ says “I AM”:

The Bread of Life– John 6:33-35 “I am the bread of life, he that cometh to me shall never hunger”. This is not physical but spiritual type of hunger, John 6:10, 26-27. Jesus had just fed five thousand men physically but Jesus now was talking about spiritual food.

  • “he that cometh”- We must come to Jesus or we will be hungry and malnourished.
  • “shall never hunger”- This person shall never hunger. This Bread nourishes, sustains life, satisfies, and gives the proper nutrients for life. Matthew 4:4 “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God”.

The Light of the World– John 8:12 “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life”. Jesus Christ is the light, follow Him.

  • “he that followeth me”- Since Jesus is the light of the World you must actively be following Him to be walking in the light and not in darkness.
  • “shall not walk in darkness”- this is spiritual darkness, in sin.
  • “shall have the light of life”- this is a spiritual light. A man is in darkness (spiritually) until he believes in Jesus Christ and then must stay in the light so he wont be walking in darkness, John 3:18-21.

The Door of Salvation– John 10:9 “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved”. This door is the only door to salvation. If any man will be saved and get to heaven, he/she must go through The Door.

  • “all roads lead to heaven”, “all religions lead to heaven”, not true. There is only one way and one door, that is Jesus Christ.

The person that says there is another way aside from believing in Jesus Christ is a “thief and a robber” John 10:10.

You can’t get there through religion, good works, being a member of a church, getting baptized, or by your spouses’ faith.

The Good Shepherd– John 10:14 “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine”. A good shepherd keeps the sheep protected, fed, cleaned, sheered, etc.

Vs 11 a good shepherd risks and sacrifices his life for his sheep- Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice on the cross vs 15 “I lay down my life for the sheep”.

Vs 3 “leadeth them out”-leads us.  Vs 4 “goeth before them”-goes before us.

“know my sheep”- he knows every struggle, fear, trial, need, situation, circumstance. He knows us intimately vs 3.

“am known of mine”- We know His life, His being, His voice (the Bible) vs 4.

Compare with the “hireling” John 10:12-13.

The Son of God– John 10:36 “I am the son of God”. Jesus Christ is the son of God. The one who left heaven, God manifest in the flesh”. John 10:30-33, they were trying to stone Jesus because they thought it was blaspheme.

  • Jesus is not just a good teacher, a prophet, a preacher, or religious leader.
  • Jesus Christ is the second person of the Godhead (trinity). He left heaven, “God manifest in the flesh”. Died for our sins and rose again the third day.

John 20:28, 31 tell us that He was in fact the Son of God.

The Way– John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”. Vs 4, 5, 6 “way”.

Jesus Christ not only shows a person how to get to God but he personally show the person the way- Hebrews 10:19-20.

Conclusion: Jesus Christ is the “I AM”, great reminder.
