The Bible is for Spiritual Growth (I Pet 2:2)

Introduction: This evening, we want to take this time to understand what it is that a Christian should do with this precious Bible. God took the time to inspire and preserve a perfect bible, and there are somethings that God expects of us to grow spiritually. When a baby is born, he begins by drinking milk and then solid food until eventually they eat normal food. The same is true with Christians, I Peter 2:2 “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby”.

A Christian will Grow Spiritually when the Bible is:

Read Daily– Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night”. Get the reading in even if you don’t feel like reading it.

Reading this Bible daily gets into the soul and spirit and changes us from the inside out. The more we read it, the more our life will change to the image of God. Reading this Bible will keep us from Sin and Sin will keep us from this Bible.

Reading this Bible will discern our thoughts and intents of the heart- Hebrews 4:12

A Christian is to read his bible daily, start with a little bit and get used to it, develop an appetite for this Book. Find a quiet place and the best time of the day for you to spend alone time with this Bible. Romans 12:2 “and be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind”.

Meditated Upon– To meditate is more than just reading it the Bible, it is to think about it, let it revolve in the mind, to contemplate. Psalm 1:2 “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in your richly”.

Meditating in this Bible give us understanding- Ps 49:3 “My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding”.

Meditating in this Bible will give you spiritual satisfaction- Psalm 63:5-6

Meditating in this Bible will give us a greater knowledge- Psalm 119:99

Meditating in this Bible will allow us to keep thinking about what we read and take it with us all day long. If we meditate on this word, we won’t meditate on other things.

Studied Diligently– II Timothy 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”. Only the KJB has the word Study- every other translation says to “try your best”. Studying the Bible is important because that is one way we learn our bible better and are approved of God. Studying is simply looking into a certain passage in detail by comparing scripture with scripture.

It will keep us learning our Bible better

It will keep our approved of God

Memorized in the Heart– Deuteronomy 6:6 “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart”. Deuteronomy 11:18 “Therefore shall ye lay up these words in your heart and in your soul”. Psalm 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart”. Memorizing the Word of God in our heart will allow us to get to it as fast as possible, when we need it.

It will keep us from Temptation- Luke 4:4 “And Jesus answered him, saying, it is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God”.

It will keep us out of Trouble and Sin- Psalm 119:11

It will keep us Trusting in God- Phil 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need”

It will keep us out of Fear (Rom 8:31 “If God be for us, who can be against us”.

Believed Entirely– I Thessalonians 2:13 “ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God”. John 2:22 “and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said”.

It will strengthen our faith in God

It will encourage us to live wholeheartedly for Him

Our hope in His promises become solidified

Obeyed Immediately– Luke 11:28 “But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.” James 1:22 “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves”.

Obeying this Bible will keep us blessed- Deuteronomy 11:27 “ A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God”.

Obeying this Bible will keep us out of trouble when we consider the consequences- Proverbs 3:12 “For whom the Lord liveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth”. Hebrews 12:6 “For whom the Lord liveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth”.

Conclusion: A Christian will grow by spending time in this Bible but there are some things that need to be done consistently. In doing these, we will grow spiritually and draw closer to God.
