Understanding the Spirit, Soul, and Body (1 Thessalonians 5:23)

1.Understand that Man has Three Parts- I Thessalonians 5:23 “and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”.
Created in God’s Image- Genesis 1:26-27 (three in one- God the Father, the Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit). I John 5:7 “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one”.
How God created Adam- Genesis 2:7 (And the lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed unto his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul). The dust of the ground is (the body), breath of life is (the spirit), and living soul is (the soul). (Like a basketball- the outside is the body, the inside rubber is the Soul, and the air inside is the spirit)

2. Understand that Each Part is Different- “spirit and soul and body”.
The Body: This is the outside of a person, his flesh.
The Spirit: The spirit of man is life from God. God is the one who gives life at birth and the one who decides when life ends. In this passage God gives life- John 1:4&9 “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world”. In this passage God keeps life- Proverbs 20:27 “the spirit of man is the candle of the Lord”. In this passage God ends life- Proverbs 24:20 “the candle of the wicked shall be put out”. (Tony Seale)
The Soul- The soul is the real person inside of us and it has a bodily form.
The soul has a bodily shape- Revelation 20:4 “I saw the souls”.
The soul wears a robe- Revelation 6:9-11 “I saw under the altar the souls…And white robes were given unto every one of them”
The soul has these things- Luke 16:19-31 eyes, mouth, tongue, a memory, and a real concern for others.

3. Understand what Happens after Death
The Body: Genesis 3:19- after death our body returns to dust.
The Spirit: Ecclesiastes 12:7- after death our spirit returns to God who gave it.
The Soul: after death the soul of a person will either go to heaven or hell based on what they did with Jesus Christ.  Heaven- 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 Luke 16:22 “Abraham’s bosom” Hell- Luke 16:22-23 “and in hell he lift up his eyes”.

4. Understand why People Need to Get Saved- At the moment of salvation, the holy spirit of God comes in and takes residence in the life of a believer. Immediately, that person begins to live eternal life and can experience God’s Love, Joy, Peace, Goodness, etc. Furthermore, when a believer dies, he gets to spend eternity in heaven with God, 2 Corinthians 5:8 “absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord”. Don’t stop telling people about Jesus Christ, He is our “blessed hope” Titus 2:13. Furthermore, God doesn’t want people to end up in hell when they die “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” II Peter 3:9.
